Prevent:
Today: To keep from happening; impede.
1611: To come before; precede.
In 1611, the word 'prevent' had two distinct meanings. One was to go
before, as a vanguard or scout would go before the principal force or
the protected dignitary, as in Psalm 59:10. This meaning for the word
has gained a seperate word, prevenient. The other meaning, which
has become the almost exclusive meaning for this word, is to impede, as
a snare would, as in Psalm 18:5. The context will show which meaning
is intended, but one must remember that it doesn't always mean impede.
